National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) Program
With a history dating back to the 1992/1993 NWBL seasons. Southern Districts Basketball Association has shared a close bond with the sport of Wheelchair Basketball in Queensland.
Originally aligned with and home to the Southern DIstricts-based 'Brisbane Breakers' wheelchair basketball team in the NWBL, the team soon rebranded to become the 'Brisbane Spartans' shortly after the first season in the league. Names such as Robert McIntyre, Rene Aherns, Mike Nugent and Mathew Le Busque were in those initial years of the team.
At the turn of the century, the team had returned to the league, this time under the 'QLD Spinning Bullets' name, managed by Sporting Wheelies, but still very closely connected to Rowland Cowan Stadium as a homebase and training facility.
After 2022 and a couple of COVID-affected seasons, the Spinning Bullets and the league folded.
In 2024, a new organisation lead by Lorraine Landon- Wheelchair Basketball Australia (WBA) , took over control of the league from Basketball Australia. Southern Districts Basketball managed to form a team to return to the NWBL, for the first time in over 20 years. Playing alongside teams such as Perth, Darwin, Manly, Wollongong, Adelaide and Red Dust (VIC).
Following the first season, the Adelaide Thunder men's team folded, which left a gap in the 7-team league. In 2025, we are proud to announce that we have been successful in entering a second team - Southern Districts Titans - into the league, alongside the Southern Districts Spartans.
The 2 NWBL teams, reaffirms the SDBA Board and Carina Leagues Club's commitment to the future of the wheelchair basketball pathway in QLD. The teams are comprised of players from the 8 of the 9 wheelchair basketball clubs in QLD;
