Statistics – Become a Basketball Statistician
What is a Basketball Statistician?

A Basketball Statistician is an official responsible for recording all actions of both teams during a game. This critical role requires precision and teamwork, with statisticians working together to document every aspect of the game.
Typically, at least two statisticians officiate each game:

Caller: Observes the on-court action and verbalizes the events to the team.

Computer Operator: Inputs the actions into the statistics program in real time.

Spotter (optional): Assists by clarifying or identifying missed actions.

Statisticians officiate at most senior basketball competitions in Australia, with accreditation allowing for opportunities at:

How to Become a Statistician
​
To become a statistician, you need to:

Be 14 years or older.

Have a basic understanding of basketball.

Possess some familiarity with computers (advantageous but not mandatory).

Steps to Get Started:

Complete a Statistician’s Course (approximately 3 hours) to earn Level 1 accreditation.

Learn to use the Basketball Statistics Computer Program.

Gain practical experience by officiating a few games.

Once accredited, your qualifications are recognized across Australia, opening the door to exciting opportunities in basketball officiating.
