Referees
Are you interested in becoming a referee? Here’s what you need to know to embark on this rewarding journey.
Much like learning to play basketball, becoming a referee requires time, practice, and determination. However, the experience can be equally rewarding and satisfying, offering a unique way to stay involved in the game you love.
At SDBAL, we ensure you’re supported every step of the way through our structured referee development program, which is designed to ease you into the role with confidence and skill.

Step 1: Join a Beginner Referee School

Our Beginner Referee Schools are held twice a year and provide a comprehensive introduction to officiating. You’ll learn:
-
The rules of the game
-
Proper positioning on the court
-
Key areas of focus during gameplay
-
The responsibilities and actions of a referee

Step 2: Shadow an Experienced Referee

Once you’ve completed the initial training, you’ll shadow an experienced referee on the court. This allows you to observe and gain firsthand insight into refereeing without the immediate pressure of making calls.

Step 3: Referee with Support

As you gain confidence, you’ll transition from shadowing to officiating alongside a more experienced referee. They’ll provide guidance and support as you begin making calls and managing the game.
Step 4: Ongoing Development

Your growth doesn’t stop there. Practical on-court training and theoretical coaching continue as you progress through various referee grades. With dedication and hard work, you could advance to refereeing in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL), national leagues, or even the Olympics.
